The Tavern Downtown

A few nights ago, I went to dinner with my sisters at the Tavern Downtown in Hartford. Located on Allyn Street, the Tavern provides a sophisticated, comfortable atmosphere and serves an extensive menu of American bar/grill food– your typical wings, sliders, gourmet burgers, sandwiches- and a range of salads and tasty looking entrees (lobster mac n’ cheese, steaks, “New England clambake”, that sort of thing)- ultimately, a fantastic selection.

I hate to say that I have mixed feelings about the Tavern, only because I seem to have made the wrong entrée choice. I decided on the mushroom risotto ($16.95) slow cooked Arborio rice with mushrooms, mixed fresh herbs, peas, shaved parmesan cheese and truffle oil…sounds incredible. And I was a little bummed- because, you see, I absolutely love mushroom risotto. And although the dish looked gorgeous, it was much blander than I expected. Of all my descriptors, I’ll have to call it “meh”. Ah well. I’ll still probably return one of these days to try something else on the menu.

However, the bright side: sisters chose the lighter sandwiches/wraps and were incredibly impressed- both were delicious!

So, we’ll go ahead and recommend the Summer Harvest: grilled portabella mushroom, zucchini, roasted peppers, cucumber, fresh mozzarella topped with pesto & served on grilled focaccia.

The New England Melt was another hit: flaked salmon with onion and celery on grilled country bread with tomato and cheddar, toasted under the broiler (both sandwiches $7.95).

Service was wonderful. The tavern also features an impressive variety of domestic and imported beers bottled and on tap, daily food and drink specials, an excellent happy hour (so I’ve heard) and live music.

The Ranchero Wrap That Rocked My World

So, it’s true, I haven’t blogged in a little while. Sorry…But that doesn’t mean I haven’t been taking myself on tons of amazing food-flavor-fun-filled outings. Because I have. I’ll catch up.

Here goes:

Cozy, gloomy Saturday morning– my sister came to visit (from New York!) so I took her around town to counteract the dreary weather with another favorite morning spot. Yes, I’m predictable, but by now you should know that I love my weekend breakfasts. As does she.

So my sister, roommate & I lazily made our way over to Pastrami on Wry in Manchester. Even though this popular eatery is usually categorized as a sandwich shop, PoW also makes a killer breakfast–I’ve been here several times and always order the same thing. I’m smitten with the Santa Fe Ranchero, a savory grilled tortilla filled with two scrambled eggs, guacamole, ranchero salsa, chipotle, melted cheddar and chili. Taste bud fiesta for sure. $5.50.

The menu provides lots of other mouthwatering breakfast sandwiches and omelette options (like the thick roasted red potato/bacon/broccoli/cheddar omelette- how good does that sound).

Pastrami on Wry also boasts some pretty decent pancakes with a handful of funky flavors: caramelized banana nut (my usual pick), the Elvis (chocolate, peanut butter chips and bananas), S’Mores (choc chips, graham cracker crumbs, marshmallow) and the Berry Cap’n Crunch pancakes…I’m just not brave enough for that last option. You might be.

Overall, breakfast here is a delight. Generous portions, moderate prices, breakfast served until 11:30. It’s a pretty basic place- nothing too noteworthy about ambiance or anything- but the food is definitely worth stopping in for. Scope out the breakfast menu here. Can’t wait to try their lunch.
